Very few gemstones captivate and capture the imagination quite like a pink diamond. Renowned for their extraordinary rarity, mesmerising blush hues, and unrivalled brilliance, pink diamonds are among the world’s most coveted gemstones. Their remarkable scarcity has made them highly sought after by collectors, investors, and jewellery lovers alike.
For decades, the world’s most significant source of natural pink diamonds was the Argyle Diamond Mine, located in Western Australia. Unlike many coloured gemstones, pink diamonds were never abundant, with vast quantities of ore mined to uncover a handful of these remarkable stones. Upon the closure of the Argyle Mine in 2020, the supply of natural pink diamonds has fallen to obsolete, further cementing their status as one of the globe’s rarest and most valuable gemstones.
Arguably, the most fascinating aspect of pink diamonds is the mystery behind their pigment. While many coloured diamonds owe their hue to trace elements or chemical impurities, the pink colour found in these gems is believed to result from distortions within the diamond’s crystal lattice. Known as plastic deformation, this process rearranges the tightly bonded carbon atoms during the diamond’s formation, altering the way in which light travels through the stone and creating its distinctive pink appearance.
Not all pink diamonds display the same depth or tone of colour, and their intensity plays a significant role in determining their value. The Gemmological Institute of America (GIA) grades pink diamonds on a scale ranging from Faint to Fancy Vivid, with richly saturated, evenly coloured stones commanding the highest prices. The Argyle Diamond Mine developed its own unique grading system, classifying diamonds into colour families – Purplish Pink, Pink, Pink Rose, and Pink Champagne, before assigning an intensity grade from one, being the most intense, to nine, being the lightest.
Exceptional rarity, coupled with remarkable beauty, and a finite global supply has made natural pink diamonds one of the most desirable gemstones in the world. As demand continues to grow and no new source has emerged to replace Argyle’s production, these extraordinary diamonds continue to appreciate in both prestige and value.
