This month, we turn our attention to a bespoke creation where vivid colour, intricate detailing and considered craftsmanship converge in an exceptional piece from the Hogans workshop.
At the heart of this 18k white gold ring sits a cushion cut Paraiba tourmaline, its striking blue-green colour forming the foundation of the design. Framing the centre is an inner halo of round cut Paraiba tourmalines, hand selected to complement its distinctive tone, followed by an outer halo of round brilliant cut white diamonds.
The centre tourmaline is secured by double claws at each corner, while both halos are bezel set and finished with delicate milgrain detailing. The fine texture of the milgrain introduces a subtle ornamental quality, contrasting with the clean lines of the 18k white gold and allowing each gemstone to remain clearly defined within the composition.
Paraiba tourmaline is distinguished by its remarkable spectrum of blue and green, with the most vivid stones displaying an almost electric turquoise quality. Rare and highly sought after, no two Paraiba tourmalines are quite alike, with variations in colour, tone and saturation contributing to the individuality of each stone. It was this distinctive character that first inspired the piece.
The cushion cut centre stone was sourced by Hogans Director and Master Jeweller, Lachlan, at a jewellery fair in Las Vegas. Its colour and proportions provided the starting point for the design, which was then sketched and developed in-house. Once the concept had been established, the surrounding Paraiba tourmalines were carefully sourced and hand selected to create a harmonious relationship with the centre stone, rather than simply replicate its colour.
From an initial gemstone discovered thousands of kilometres away, to a considered design developed at the Hogans bench, every stage of the process contributes to the finished piece. The precise arrangement of the halos, the hand-finished milgrain and the intricate setting work bring together colour, texture and light in a design that could only have been created through the bespoke process.
The result is a one-of-a-kind ring with a distinctly individual character; a considered expression of the gemstone that inspired it, and a piece of fine jewellery made to be treasured for generations.
