A truly unique cluster-style ring, featuring one of the rarest and most valuable semi-precious gemstones to exist, Alexandrite. Crafted in a three-tone combination of 18k rose, white and yellow gold, the design and intricacy of this bespoke ring is truly captivating. At the heart of the design sits a certified 1.76ct cushion cut alexandrite, one of the most rare precious gemstones to be found on Earth. Surrounding the stone and contrasting with its vibrant colour is a halo of high quality, round brilliant cut Argyle pink diamonds. Completing the head of the ring is a decorative halo of heart, pear and moon-shaped white gold settings, each embellished by pavé set petite white diamonds, finished with a classic milgrain setting. Finally, the yellow gold metal that forms the band and shoulders of the ring features a split shank detail which gracefully frames the detail of the head.
Referred to as the ‘Emerald by day, Ruby by night’, alexandrite is a true gift of nature. Known for its extraordinary colour-changing properties, this gemstone offers a unique visual experience, making it stand out in the world of precious gemstones. Alexandrite was first discovered near the Tokovaya River in the Ural Mountains of Russia in the early 1830s. The gem's striking ability to change colours - from green in daylight to red under incandescent light - immediately captured fascination. This colour change is due to the complex way alexandrite absorbs light, a characteristic stemming from its unique chemical composition.
With its complex crystal structure, and primary presence of the trace element; chromium, the gem has an alternative light absorption ability, depending on the light source. When exposed to natural daylight, the gem absorbs the wavelengths, causing it to appear with blue or green hues. Compared to incandescent light, where the gem exhibits a rich red or purplish-red hue. This phenomenon, known as the alexandrite effect, makes it one of the most sought-after and fascinating gemstones in the world. Furthermore, it ranks an 8.5 on the Moh’s hardness scale, making it durable and suitable for everyday wear.
The original deposits of alexandrite in Russia are largely depleted, increasing its rarity and value. Today, the gemstone is also mined in Brazil, Sri Lanka, and East Africa, but often has different colour change characteristics and inclusions compared to their Russian counterparts.
Alexandrite is more than just a gemstone; it is a marvel of nature. Its unique colour-changing property sets it apart from all other gemstones, offering a magical and captivating experience. Here at Hogans, we are so incredibly honoured to have been gifted with the responsibility to design and craft such a stunning bespoke piece that showcases this incredibly rare gemstone.
