As we step into the month of September, we are introduced to the sapphire gemstone. From vibrant hues of royal blue to hot pink or even bi-colour tones, this precious gemstone is like no other. Ranking 9 out of 10 on the Mohs hardness scale, sapphires are the perfect gemstone to have incorporated into your everyday pieces. Whether it be an extravagant engagement ring, a special necklace or a delicate pair of earrings, rest assured this is a gemstone that is going to last you through generations.
Although sapphires are found all over the world, the majority of the highest-quality gemstones are sourced from South Africa, East Asia, Sri Lanka (Ceylon), Madagascar and Australia. Similar to diamonds they also are graded against the four Cs being that of colour, clarity, cut and carat. However, there are also the variables of the country of origin and curing factors that have an influence on the gemstones market value. Generally, the paler and pastel-coloured sapphires are always less expensive when compared to an intensely vibrant sapphire. Making the most valuable or sought-after sapphire colour tone in the marketplace at the moment those with intense blue, pink or padparadscha colourings.
As well as being the all-encompassing September birthstone, the sapphire is also renowned for its special symbolism marking the 45th wedding anniversary. It officially became a symbol of royal love when Britain’s Prince Charles gifted Lady Diana her notorious 12-carat blue sapphire and diamond cluster engagement ring.
Sapphires as a whole are formed from the mineral Corundum. However, when introduced to other trace elements this can alter their natural colouring, ultimately gifting us with the stunning range of sapphire colour hues available today:
- Blue Sapphires: Trace elements of Titanium and Iron.
- Pink Sapphires: Trace elements of Chromium.
- Yellow Sapphires: Trace elements of small proportions of Iron.
- Orange Sapphires: Trace elements of Iron and Chromium.
- Purple Sapphires: Trace elements of Chromium, Iron and Titanium.
- Green Sapphires: Trace elements of Iron and Titanium.
- White/Colourless Sapphires: Pure Corundum with no present trace elements.
